The series, entitled “Seizures”, composed of 19 images dissociated in their presentation, was partly produced in 2019 by the center of art La Villa du Parc for a collective exhibition that Florent Meng organized and entitled On y marche avec l’oreille (l’appel du terrain) (translated : We walk there with the ear (the call from the field)). It was produced by the artist alongside the 2019 French national commission “Flux – A society on the move”, which he won and was given to by the CNAP (National Center for the Arts Plastic), Paris (FR) dedicated to transfrontier flows in Greater Geneva. In this context, Florent Meng carried out a photographic survey with Swiss customs officials, following them for several months in their training and border control work. Forging privileged links with them, he became interested in seized objects confiscated by customs in the transfrontier area of ​​Greater Geneva. Pipes, fake credit cards, fake stamps of Swiss work cards, etc. are all objects that speak hollow of the border, the desires that are inscribed there, the trafficking that happens there, and the tensions plus economic logics and legal issues that confront them. Customs officials carefully store these illegal objects which transit and act as indicators of economic and social exchanges in border zones. After interviews, the customs officials and the photographer selected the objects they found most interesting, both symbolically (objects representative of French-Swiss territory – fake working stamps, etc.) and formally and for the attachment that customs officials had to certain objects. Florent Meng produced this series of photography according to a documentary studio protocol (frontality, neutral backgrounds, details rendered by the photographic chamber), making it possible to give a monumentality to these objects, often made with precarious means, and of which we discover the ingenuity. These sulphurous objects become, under the photographer’s eye, small mysterious sculptures with strong fictional and evocative potential. La série, intitulée « Saisies », composée de 19 images dissociables dans leur présentation, a été en partie produite en 2019 par le centre d’art la Villa du Parc pour une exposition collective que j’ai organisée et intitulée « On y marche avec l’oreille (l’appel du terrain) ». Elle a été réalisée par l’artiste parallèlement à la commande nationale française 2019 « Flux -une société en mouvement », dont il a été lauréat et qui lui a été faite par le CNAP (centre national des arts plastiques), Paris (Fr) consacrée aux flux transfrontaliers dans le Grand Genève. Dans ce cadre, Florent Meng a mené un travail d’enquête photographique auprès des douaniers suisses, les suivant pendant plusieurs mois dans leur travail d’entraînement et de contrôle aux frontières. Nouant des liens privilégiés avec eux, il s’est intéressé aux objets de saisie confisqués par les douanes dans l’espace transfrontalier du Grand Genève. Pipes, fausse carte de crédit, faux tampon de cartes de travail suisses, etc. sont autant d’objets qui parlent en creux de la frontière, des désirs qui s’y inscrivent, des trafics qui s’y passent et des tensions et logiques économiques et juridiques qui s’y confrontent. Les douaniers conservent avec soin ces objets illégaux qui transitent et agissent comme des révélateurs des échanges économiques, sociaux dans les zones frontalières. Au terme d’entretiens, les douaniers et le photographe ont sélectionnés les objets qu’ils trouvaient les plus intéressants, tant au niveau symbolique (objets représentatifs du territoire franco-suisse – faux tampons de travail, etc.) que formel et pour l’attachement que les douaniers portent à certains objets. Florent Meng a réalisé cette série de photographie selon un protocole de studio documentaire (frontalité, fonds neutres, détails rendus par la chambre photographique), permettant de donner une monumentalité à ces objets, souvent fabriqués avec des moyens précaires, et dont on découvre l’ingéniosité. Ces objets sulfureux deviennent, sous l’oeil du photographe, de petites sculptures mystérieuses au potentiel fictionnel et évocatoire fort.
