The secularisation of the Lebanese political system is called into question. On 27 March 2011, in an unprecedented mobilization and in response to a call by the movements concerned, 15,000 people rallied in the streets of Beirut to confront the two major coalitions of the country, known as «The March 8 Alliance» and «The March 14 Alliance», with their failure to take a solid stance. Although this movement benefited from the momentum of the Tunisian and Egyptian protests which had opened up a realm of possibilities for the Arab world, its origins date back further. It is even listed in paragraph H in a preamble of the Lebanese constitution : «The abolition of political confessionalism is a basic national goal and shall be achieved according to a gradual plan.» Yet in the past twenty years, no politician has been capable of realizing this popular cause.
